Late last year as I was looking at business plans for 2016, it occurred to me that an "upgrade" to my website was in order. I'd utilized the same template-driven website provider for 3 years and was ready to do something new without the limitations of the old provider.
When shopping for a new provider, one of the first things I wanted was a website that looked good on the computer as well as on the phone. I discovered that all of Weebly's templates, or themes are "responsive," which basically means that they work well on the computer, phone, or tablet. I didn't think this was very important until I noticed how often I was purchasing things over the web from my phone!
The second most important thing to me was the ability to play with their interface and get a feel for it before I purchased. Weebly had that covered as well. I could build my site and play with most everything for free. Since I have a multitude of art sculptures and functional art, creating an on-line store was a must, but I didn't have to commit a penny until I began to build my storefront. This was perfect, because I fell in love with the user interface long before I began to put my storefront together. Weebly has a drag-n-drop structure that allows me to easily position different web elements on the page and easily load them with information, photos, videos, maps, and more.
While I was "playing" I took advantage of Weebly's extensive help section, filled with videos and how-to tutorials that allowed me to get a feel for each segment of the construction before I started something new. As you would expect with anything unfamiliar, I ran into a few spots where I was not sure what to do next - There was a convenient "Chat" button on the Weebly help page, and I soon discovered that a helpful person was only a few keystrokes away. The site I'd formerly been using had me submit a support ticket which would typically be answered in 24 hrs, so it's easy to see how much of an improvement the chat button is.
While I was combing through the Weebly help section, I ran across information regarding an app that I could put on my phone that would allow me to work with my website. Although I'm addicted to working on a bigger screen, I thought it might be helpful to have this just for fun. About a week or so after I published my site, I got my first notification from Weebly that I had a sale. This may not seem like much but it was super-helpful to know about this activity without having to wade through a pile of emails. I've only begun to scratch the surface of what the mobile app can do for me, but suffice to say that I'm pleased so far.
So, to sum things up, if you're a do-it-yourself-er like I am, or even if your're not, but you think you might like to be, the Weebly website builder interface is simple and intuitive, with help only a few clicks away. You might surprise yourself at how easy -and fun- it is to make your own website.
